Continuing Ed Summer ‘12

I’m happy to announce my course proposal for the SMFA Summer Continuing Ed session has been approved! Maybe I’ll see you in class?

An Introduction to the Analogue Black and White Process

Erik Benjamins

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 6:30-9:45pm

Four weeks (June 5–July 3)

PHT XXXX-S1

Two Credits / Tuition: $920

This class is designed for students with an interest in the analogue black and white photographic process, those who have never shot or printed from 35mm black and white film in a dark room. We will use the 35mm cameras from the stockroom. With the exception of a camera operation/shooting day to start off the course, all other classes will take place in the photo facilities area, primarily the dark room. By the end of the course, students will feel comfortable in shooting and process 35mm film, printing RC silver gelatin prints (with the option of Fiber), and print finishing including spot toning and mounting. While instructional lectures and lab time will focus rigorously on craft, what will constantly be pursued conversationally is the relationship between analogue and contemporary digital photographic processes and approaches, thereby expanding upon and challenging the student’s ideas, motivations and comforts regarding the ubiquitous presence of photography today and its relationship to fostering a craft and taking time.
